In this monumental Sumi-e composition, Gérald Gaboriau captures in a single, unbroken stroke the cosmic confrontation between Enlil, the Sumerian god of tempests and primordial force, and Anu, the celestial sovereign and father of the gods. This mythological rebellion marks a turning point in the Sumerian cosmogonic narrative: the separation of sky and earth, the assertion of cosmic order, and the challenge to paternal authority. Enlil’s act is both a founding rupture and the dawn of structured creation, echoing the eternal tension between chaos and order, violence and harmony, darkness and light.
The artwork’s dynamic calligraphic gesture, at once impetuous and controlled, embodies the duality of this divine struggle.
